Advanced repair capabilities

Professional-grade PDF repair tools that fix what other tools can't

Structure Repair

Rebuilds corrupted PDF document structure, including broken headers and cross-reference tables that prevent opening.

XRef Table Rebuild

Scans the entire file byte-by-byte for object markers and reconstructs the cross-reference table from scratch.

Header Reconstruction

Fixes damaged or missing PDF headers and version markers so viewers can recognize and open the file.

Page Tree Recovery

Rebuilds detached page tree nodes and re-attaches orphaned page objects to restore document structure.

Metadata Cleanup

Removes corrupted or invalid metadata entries that cause PDF readers to crash or display error messages.

Content Stream Recovery

Attempts to extract and reconstruct readable content from damaged content streams, recovering as much as possible.

Object Recovery

Identifies and re-attaches detached page elements, images, and text content that became disconnected.

Encryption Removal

Removes password protection and encryption flags from damaged files when the structure allows lenient parsing.

Diagnostic Report

Get a detailed breakdown of every issue found and every fix applied, with severity levels and object counts.

Corruption Severity

Visual severity meter shows how damaged the file is — from minor issues to severe structural corruption.

Integrity Validation

After repair, the tool validates the output PDF structure to ensure it meets specification and will open reliably.

Before/After Preview

Compare original file details against the repaired version — see page counts, file sizes, and recovered elements.

Text Extraction Fallback

When full repair is not possible, the tool extracts all readable text from damaged areas as a last resort.

Batch Repair Mode

Queue multiple corrupted PDFs and repair them all at once. Download fixed files individually or as a ZIP.

Auto-Detect All Issues

One-click scan automatically detects and categorizes all corruption types, then applies the optimal repair strategy.

100% Client-Side

Your damaged files never leave your browser. All scanning and repair happens locally — total privacy guaranteed.

How PDF repair works

Three steps from corrupted to recovered

01

Upload damaged file

Drag and drop your corrupted PDF. The tool accepts files that won't open, show errors, or display blank pages.

02

Scan & diagnose

The lenient parser scans every byte for valid objects, identifies corruption types, and rebuilds the document structure.

03

Download repaired PDF

Get a clean, valid PDF with rebuilt cross-reference tables, valid trailer, and recovered content. Plus a diagnostic report.

Your damaged files never leave your browser

PDF Repair runs 100% client-side using JavaScript and pdf-lib. Your corrupted files are scanned, diagnosed, and repaired entirely on your device. No servers, no uploads, no tracking. Your sensitive documents — legal contracts, financial reports, medical records — stay completely private.

Frequently asked questions

PDF Repair handles corrupted cross-reference tables, broken headers, damaged page trees, invalid metadata, detached objects, and encryption flags. It uses pdf-lib's lenient parser to scan for valid objects and rebuild the document structure. Files that won't open, show blank pages, or crash viewers are the most common candidates for repair.

The tool loads your damaged PDF using a lenient parsing mode that skips over malformed objects and rebuilds the xref table from whatever valid objects it finds. It then saves a clean copy with a new cross-reference table, valid trailer, and correct byte offsets for every surviving object. This is the same technique used by qpdf and Ghostscript.

For files with physically missing content (bytes overwritten with zeros), the page will exist in the repaired file but render as blank. However, the tool can still extract readable text from partially damaged content streams. The diagnostic report will tell you exactly what was recovered and what was lost.

In most cases, yes. Text, images, fonts, and page layout are preserved when the underlying objects are intact. The repair focuses on fixing the document structure — not re-encoding content. Metadata like author and title may be cleaned up if they were causing corruption.

Absolutely. PDF Repair runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are read locally, processed locally, and the repaired output is generated on your device. No data is uploaded to any server. You can verify this by checking your browser's Network tab during repair.

Yes. Switch to batch mode to queue multiple files. The tool will scan and repair each one, showing per-file status and a diagnostic report for each. You can download all repaired files as a single ZIP archive.
